It’s true. The KoHi Labs app has some bugs. Some we know about…and we’re keeping those a secret…sshhhh. And sometimes, a bug leaks out and we need to share it with our user-base. Our latest KoHi 1.6.7 release has a bug we think you should know about. The good news? It ONLY about 5 grams of water in certain brew timer conditions. The bad news? We’re the app that brews with “laboratory precision.” Whoops! The marketing script and the program logic collided!
So, just in case 5 grams matters to you…and honestly we think it should…here’s what is happening in KoHi:
- We updated to a more accurate slider and target mass algorithm.
- We didn’t update all of our code with the new formula. Bad code monkey!
- In certain recipe conditions, the new and old algorithm results don’t match.
- This is not a right vs. wrong result. Rather, it’s a more accurate vs less accurate result.
- As a user with a careful eye, you may notice that the final less accurate target mass doesn’t match the more accurate recipe target mass.
- In testing, we’ve seen about a 5 gram error in certain conditions.
- This bug is resolved in the KoHi app version 1.6.9 – which should be available next week.
So what about some other bugs you might not know about? Well, the ones we know about correlate to code which controls UI behavior and file management in the iOS. Frankly, we’re more focused on user experience, recipe management, recipe parameters, and timer orchestration right now. So those little bugs can live till another update. Lucky bugs! We thought providing our users some new methods and more extensive recipe options were more important tasks right now. Lucky users!

OK, we just validated a massive KoHi Labs app update and we can walk away from the surreal logic of computer code for the next few days! To help get our brains back to “reality”, I want to chat about one of the inspirations for KoHi Labs: social awareness.
Huh? Coffee? Social Awareness? Yes. And now we’re jumping into this blog post’s title.
Anyone familiar with large scale manufacturing or retailing understands the critical aspect of “Supply Chain Management (SCM)”. In fact, the secret sauce to many successful Fortune 500s is their SCM capabilities and controls. But seriously, what’s the social value of massive SCM capabilities? The shareholder value is obvious…but we’re talking social value here. The anecdotal evidence points to social costs…not gains. I’d probably argue that “Supply Chain” is an appropriate double entendre. Do you think that the sales clerk at your local “big-box” store can tell you where the clothes, gadgets, or goods originated…or how they got there…or who made them? They might know who drove the fork-lift that stacked the goods on the shelf. And that’s about as far as their knowledge of the supply chain goes. It’s a massively efficient process and certainly generates value at a macro level. But is it socially beautiful? Have you ever heard a “big-box” retailer brag about where their products are made and how they extract efficiencies from labor in the “supply chain”? There is a reason why we don’t hear about that often.
So…what’s this have to do with coffee? Think flow!
The beauty of coffee is that you can walk into any locally owned coffee shop and and ask where your product originated. If you find the right barista, they might even know the following:
- Who grew the beans and where they were harvested
- Who imported the beans
- Who roasted the beans…and the date too
- Who brewed your cup
Sure, that’s not a massive supply chain. Sure, it’s not massively complicated and stunning. But, it sure feels nice to know where your coffee came from. It feels nice to know that people along the “supply flow” have real names and real stories. The feeling of making something wonderful flows from beginning to end. In an era where everything around us has mysterious origins…the local coffee shop just might be the place to restore a sense of global humanity. We’re all in this crazy world together. And when we take care of our “supply flow”, it tastes awesome!

The globalization of the marketplace is stunning and amazing. Frankly, we should demand that it have macro-social benefits too. Globalization can bring people together in socially aware AND financially productive ways. The growing local coffee scene is the beautiful free-market hub which locally connects us to a larger world.
